Many travelers choose the Hanoi to Ninh Binh train for its comfortable seats and scenic views. Others prefer the Hanoi to Ninh Binh bus, which is easy to book and runs frequently. Some even opt for a private car, which is ideal if you want more flexibility with your time.

If you’re coming from other regions in the north, Ninh Binh is still very accessible. From the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau to Ninh Binh, buses or private transfers are available. You can also travel from Pu Luong to Ninh Binh, which is becoming a more popular combination for nature lovers. Mua cave was one of the highlights of any Ninh Binh itinerary. To get to the viewpoint, you’ll climb a steep stone staircase – people say it’s around 500 steps. The hike leads to two karst peaks offering incredible panoramic views of the countryside, stretching for miles in every direction. 

The area is part of a small eco-resort and includes some beautifully designed Instagrammable spots, like a seasonal lotus field. In the peak heat of the day, Mua cave becomes very busy with tour groups, so visiting early in the morning is ideal. We had the whole place to ourselves at sunrise, which made the experience feel even more magical. 

Bich Dong Pagoda

Bich Dong is a lovely Buddhist pagoda located just a few minutes from the center of Tam Coc. If you’ve ever searched Ninh Binh online, chances are you’ve seen photos of this temple’s charming entrance bridge, surrounded by water and framed by mountains.

Beyond the famous Instagram spot, there’s much more to explore. The pagoda stretches up the mountain and includes several cave sanctuaries, so wear good shoes – it can get slippery. 

Also, since it’s a sacred place, dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees. We recommend visiting Bich Dong pagoda early in the morning to enjoy the quiet atmosphere and avoid the crowds and pushy street vendors near the gate.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1009 and is a meaningful historical site. Set among limestone hills and close to the Hoang Long River, it once served as a strategic center thanks to its access to water and trade routes. Though most of the original buildings are gone, you can still visit well-preserved temples and reconstructed gates from later centuries.

Today, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is small and doesn’t take long to explore. There are two main temples from different dynasties and a royal tomb, all set in peaceful grounds. Unless you’re a big fan of Vietnamese history, it doesn’t need to be a top priority in your Ninh Binh itinerary. However, it’s worth stopping by for an hour or so, especially if it fits conveniently into your travel route.

Bai Dinh Pagoda

Bai Dinh Pagoda is the largest Buddhist complex in Vietnam and a key part of the Trang An UNESCO World Heritage area. Spanning over five square kilometers, it includes a wide range of attractions: a 13-story tower called Bao Thien Stupa, large statues, and two main temples. Although it may look ancient, much of the complex was only completed in 2010.

Visitors should wear comfortable shoes because walking distances here are long. Climbing the stupa is well worth it beacause the views from the top are amazing. Entry to the complex is free, but shuttle services and the stupa entrance come with extra fees (a full access package is around 200,000 VND). 

Van Long Nature Reserve

Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve is the largest wetland reserve in the Red River Delta and a hidden gem for nature lovers. Taking a boat trip here is like gliding through a painting.

This area is also home to rare wildlife, including the Delacour’s langur, one of the world’s most endangered primates. While Van Long is not as crowded as Tam Coc or Trang An, its quiet beauty and rich ecosystem make it a wonderful stop for those seeking a more relaxed and unique Ninh Binh experience.

Dong Chuong Lake

Dong Chuong Lake is known for its curving shape and is surrounded by hills covered in pine trees. It’s a great spot for picnics or a quiet walk by the water, far from the busier sites of Ninh Binh.

You can also hike up the nearby hills to visit Ao Troi – a natural pond said to never run dry – and Thac Ba Tua, a gentle waterfall that adds a touch of freshness to your trip. Dong Chuong is best for those who enjoy peaceful landscapes and light outdoor activities.

Thien Ha Cave

Cuc Phuong is Vietnam’s oldest national park and one of its most important conservation areas. Located in Nho Quan District, it has received the title of Asia’s Leading National Park for five years in a row (2019–2023). Entry is 60,000 VND for adults and 10,000 VND for children under 10.

Cuc Phuong National Park is rich in biodiversity and offers many ways to explore: hiking under ancient trees, biking along quiet paths, spotting wildlife at night, and visiting the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. The first option is Tam Coc, a well-known and easy-to-access area with a classic mix of rice fields and caves. However, it tends to be crowded with tourists, and during peak season it might feel a bit rushed. We’ve tried this tour ourselves and shared our honest thoughts in another section of this guide.

The second choice is Trang An, which many travelers prefer for its well-organized routes and beautiful natural setting. The tour here takes you through more caves and temples, offering a slightly longer and more peaceful ride compared to Tam Coc.

If you want a quiet and less touristy experience, consider a boat tour at the Van Long Nature Reserve, located north of Tam Coc. This hidden gem is perfect for spotting birds and enjoying the wetlands in silence. It’s not as famous, but it’s truly special for those who enjoy nature and calm settings.

In general, food in Ninh Binh is affordable, easy to find, and similar to what you’d expect across Vietnam. Still, there are a few local dishes you might want to try while you’re here, especially if you’re looking for something unique.

One of the most famous local dishes is Goat Salad with Lime, made from mountain goats raised freely in the rocky hills. The meat is mixed with lime juice, chili, garlic, pepper, and sesame seeds. While this dish might not sound or look very appealing to some, it’s a regional favorite and a must-try for adventurous food lovers.

Another well-known dish is Crispy Rice, made by cooking sticky rice, pressing it flat, drying it, then deep-frying it until golden and crunchy. It’s usually served with goat meat or stir-fried vegetables and makes for a tasty snack or side dish.

Tam Coc has plenty of cozy spots where you can enjoy a beer, a smoothie, or a meal by the river. Between Tam Coc and Trang An, there are also many riverside places to eat with stunning views. We also noticed that vegetarian options in Ninh Binh are surprisingly good—better than in many other parts of northern Vietnam, with lots of flavor and fair prices.

If you’re looking to try more local food, don’t miss Ninh Binh Mountain Goat. You can find restaurants that specialize in this dish, offering grilled goat, goat hotpot, goat stir-fry, and more, all seasoned with the rich local spices that give the meat its unique taste.

Another favorite is Eel Vermicelli Soup, a comforting dish made with soft vermicelli noodles and fresh eels. The eels are marinated with spices like fish sauce, garlic, pepper, and chili, then slowly cooked until tender. It’s served hot with fresh herbs and a flavorful broth – a must-try for anyone interested in tasting true local flavors.

Unlike more touristy spots, Kenh Ga remains quiet and local, giving you a more authentic and slow-paced moment in nature.

If you have just one day, focus on the most iconic sights that Ninh Binh is famous for. Tam Coc is perfect for visitors who don’t have their own transportation or those who prefer to be close to the action. You’ll find plenty of local transportation options here, such as buses and taxis. The area also has a vibrant nightlife, with bars, karaoke spots, and even a party bus near the boat dock.

Where to stay in Tam Coc

• Della Luna Tam Coc: An affordable option with lovely hosts (the owner even brought me yogurt when I was feeling ill). The location is central, the rooms are clean and modern, and it’s great value for money.
• Nam Hoa Hotel: A more comfortable, Western-style hotel, ideal for groups. It’s centrally located and has a good standard of service for those seeking something a bit more familiar.

Trang An

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more peaceful and serene environment, Trang An could be the right choice for you. Located just to the north of Tam Coc, Trang An is known for its tranquil beauty and dramatic landscapes. 

The area is quieter, offering a rural, more laid-back atmosphere with lush greenery, limestone cliffs, and winding rivers. If you’re seeking a slower pace and more nature-oriented surroundings, Trang An is a perfect retreat.

Trang An is less commercial than Tam Coc, but it offers stunning homestays in secluded locations, often right next to towering karst formations. However, it’s slightly more remote, so if you want to explore nearby restaurants or enjoy more tourist activities, you might have to travel a little further.

Where to stay in Trang An

• Trang An Memory Homestay: Located at the foot of beautiful karst rocks, this homestay offers charming bungalows and a lovely swimming pool. It’s peaceful and quiet, making it a great place for relaxation.
• Lotus Field Homestay: Cute, small huts with a crazy beautiful view. Run by a friendly family, it’s an excellent spot for coffee lovers. Even if you’re not staying here, it’s worth visiting for the peaceful vibe.

In terms of transportation, it’s a good idea to rent a scooter in Trang An, especially if you’re staying in the more remote areas. Many homestays offer scooter rentals, so it’s easy to explore the area at your own pace.

On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter, more rural setting where you can relax in nature, Trang An offers a peaceful retreat. Both locations are easily accessible from each other, so if you have the time, you could even split your stay and experience the best of both worlds.
