A glimpse of Dong Chuong lake Ninh Binh

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the usual tourist trails in Ninh Binh, Dong Chuong Lake might be just what you need in your Ninh Binh tours. About 30 kilometers from the city center, this hidden gem sits between the two rural communes of Phu Long and Phu Loc in Nho Quan District.

Unlike the bustling river routes or iconic limestone cliffs that characterize experiences like the Trang An boat tour, Dong Chuong Lake offers its own brand of quiet magic. Its calm waters reflect the sky like a massive glass mirror, creating an atmosphere of stillness that soothes the soul.

Surrounded by pine-covered hills and soft winding roads, Dong Chuong Lake offers a refreshingly green corner of Vietnam, where nature still whispers in its calmest voice. The scent of pine fills the air, clean and crisp, and the only sound you might hear is the rustling leaves or birds calling from somewhere deep in the woods.

One of the first things I noticed when I arrived was the overwhelming green – not just from the water but from everything around it. The soft light filtered through the trees, and early in the morning, a thin layer of mist floated across the lake like something out of a fairytale. As the sun climbed higher, its rays touched the dewdrops on the pine needles, making them sparkle like tiny pieces of glass.

If you’re planning a quiet getaway from more active attractions like walking street Ninh Binh or the vibrant local markets, this place is a refreshing alternative. I visited without high expectations, simply wanting a peaceful day out of the city. Dong Chuong Lake Ninh Binh may not be well-known—but perhaps that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Dong Chuong Lake in Ninh Binh transforms beautifully throughout the year, but it’s in the early summer that it truly comes alive.

Located in a humid subtropical climate, Dong Chuong Lake experiences four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I’ve found that the best time to visit is from late March to early June.

During these months, the air is fresh and the weather is not too hot, and not yet touched by the heavy rains of mid-summer. It’s the perfect balance for outdoor activities like kayaking, walking around the pine forest, or simply laying out a picnic by the water’s edge. If you’re already exploring highlights like the Bai Dinh Pagoda, this is a serene stop to add to your itinerary for a more nature-focused experience. This place is an ideal place for your Ninh Binh boat tours

My trip to Dong Chuong in early April was quiet, yet full of color and warmth. The sunlight filtered softly through the tall pine trees, casting dancing shadows on the calm surface of the lake. The breeze carried a faint earthy scent, mixed with the fresh aroma of pine needles, and the only sounds I heard were birds calling.

By bus

You can take a bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh – buses leave frequently from My Dinh or Giap Bat stations. It’s a convenient, budget-friendly choice, especially if you’d rather relax and let someone else do the driving. Once you arrive in the city center, it’s simple to rent a motorbike or catch a taxi for the last leg of the trip. If time allows, consider a stop at Trang An boat tour or nearby attractions before heading off the beaten path to Dong Chuong.

Drive yourself

Many travelers, especially those who love flexibility and the open road, choose to go by car or motorbike. The route from Hanoi is fairly straightforward—just follow the Cau Gie expressway to National Highway 1A, pass through Phu Ly, and head toward Ninh Binh city

From there, you can follow Google Maps through Trang An, then continue to Pho Ria and follow the small road about 3 more kilometers to reach the lake. Or you can also hop on an electric car or even walk the final section near the lake.

As for me, I chose to drive a motorbike, and I’m so glad I did. There’s something incredibly freeing about being on two wheels, with the wind on your face and the road stretching out ahead.

I could stop whenever I liked: to admire the mountains in the distance, to take a photo, or just to breathe in the fresh pine-scented air. That final stretch near the lake, where sunlight filtered through the trees and the sound of birds filled the silence, was pure magic.

Savoring delicious dishes

Of course, no trip to Dong Chuong Lake would be complete without sampling some of the local cuisine. The area is famous for its unique and delicious dishes, and trying them is a must during your visit.

One standout is xoi trung kien, a dish made from sticky rice and fried ant eggs. The eggs are gathered from the nearby forests, and when mixed with the rice, they create a flavorful combination that’s both sweet and savory. It’s a local delicacy you won’t find anywhere else, and the sound of the eggs popping as you take a bite adds to the experience.

Another must-try dish is the mountain goat meat, known for its tenderness and rich flavor. The goats are raised naturally on the mountainsides, giving the meat a unique taste.

You’ll find a variety of ways to enjoy goat meat, from grilled to stir-fried, and each dish is a celebration of the region’s culinary traditions. Pair it with fresh herbs and a side of local dipping sauces, and you’ve got a meal that perfectly complements the rustic charm of the lake.

Lastly, don’t miss out on oc nui (mountain snails), a dish that’s both delicious and nutritious. The snails feed on wild plants and herbs, which gives their meat a distinct, herbal flavor.

Whether boiled, steamed, or stir-fried with fresh ingredients like lemongrass and chili, they make for a satisfying treat that’s a real local favorite. You can even take some home as a unique souvenir.

A few tips to keep in mind when traveling to Dong Chuong lake

When planning a trip to Dong Chuong Lake, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring you have a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips that will help you make the most of your time at this beautiful destination.

Tips for traveling to Dong Chuong Lake
Tips for traveling to Dong Chuong Lake

Firstly, comfort is key. Opt for casual clothing, like a simple t-shirt and comfortable sneakers or sandals.

The terrain around the lake can be uneven, so having sturdy footwear is essential for easy movement. If you’re traveling during the summer, don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the harsh UV rays.

Another piece of advice I’d offer is to bring along some snacks or light food. The area around the lake doesn’t have many shops or food vendors, so it’s a good idea to have something to munch on during your visit.

Whether it’s a sandwich or a few fruits, it will keep you energized as you explore the area. Just remember to clean up after yourself. If you decide to picnic or enjoy a snack by the lake, make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

Speaking of planning ahead, I highly recommend checking the weather forecast before your trip. Dong Chuong Lake is a great place to visit, but if it’s rainy or stormy, your experience can be quite different. Make sure you’re prepared for the weather conditions so you can pack accordingly.

If you’re planning to swim or try kayaking on the lake, safety is a top priority. It’s always a good idea to wear a life jacket when on the water.

Having the right gear can make your adventure safer and more enjoyable. I still remember my first time on the lake—the gentle lapping of the water, the cool breeze on my face, and the feeling of peace all around me.

Also, if you plan to stay overnight, it’s best to book your accommodation ahead of time. The area has limited options, and rooms can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Booking at least two weeks in advance will give you a better selection and ensure you don’t miss out.

Finally, don’t forget the essentials! Make sure you have all your important documents with you, whether it’s your ID, flight ticket, or hotel booking. Having everything ready will save you time and hassle.
